Translation guide
The English word "Oriental" is now considered outdated and often offensive when referring to people. In Japanese, there is no direct equivalent with the same connotations. Learners should use specific terms for countries, regions, or cultural items instead of a blanket term.
Describing a person from East Asia in a general or outdated sense
Literally 'Eastern person'. Used in historical or literary contexts. Can sound exoticizing or old-fashioned in modern speech.
Avoid using for individuals; prefer specific nationality.
彼は東洋人のような顔立ちをしている。
He has Oriental features.
Instead of 'Oriental', use the person's actual nationality (e.g., Japanese, Chinese, Korean). This is the most natural and respectful approach.
彼女は韓国人です。
She is Korean.
Means 'Asian person'. Broader than 'Oriental' and includes South, Southeast, and East Asians. More common in modern Japanese.
アジア人の友達がいます。
I have Asian friends.
Describing objects, art, philosophy, or styles associated with East Asia
Adjectival phrase meaning 'Eastern' or 'Oriental'. Commonly used for traditional arts, medicine, philosophy, etc.
東洋の哲学に興味があります。
I'm interested in Oriental philosophy.
東洋医学を勉強しています。
I'm studying Oriental medicine.
Often more precise and natural to specify the country (e.g., 日本の, 中国の, 韓国の) rather than using the broad term 東洋の.
中国の伝統的な絵画
traditional Chinese painting
Referring to East Asia as a region
Means 'the East' or 'the Orient'. Used in geographical, historical, or cultural contexts. Often contrasted with 西洋 (seiyou, the West).
東洋と西洋の文化の違い
differences between Oriental and Western cultures
Referring to a person as 東洋人 (touyoujin) can sound exoticizing or old-fashioned. It is safer to use the specific nationality (e.g., 中国人, 韓国人, 日本人) or regional terms like アジア人 (ajiajin) when appropriate.
彼は中国人です。
He is Chinese.
Japanese commonly uses country-specific adjectives (e.g., 日本の, 中国の, 韓国の) rather than a broad 'Oriental' category. This is both more natural and more respectful.
Loanword from English. Used in brand names, restaurant names, or to evoke an exotic 'Oriental' atmosphere. Not used for people.
Can sound commercial or stereotypical. Avoid in serious contexts.
オリエンタルな雰囲気のレストラン
a restaurant with an Oriental atmosphere
Means 'East Asia'. A modern, neutral geographical term. More precise than 東洋.
東アジアの国々
East Asian countries
