The English word "ambiguous" describes something unclear, open to multiple interpretations, or vague. In Japanese, there is no single perfect equivalent; the best choice depends on whether you mean a statement, situation, attitude, or visual expression.

The most common and versatile word for "ambiguous." It can describe vague statements, unclear memories, or fuzzy boundaries. Often used with な to modify nouns.
彼の返事は曖昧だった。
His answer was ambiguous.
曖昧な記憶しかない。
I only have a vague memory.
Literally "not clear." More formal and often used in written or technical contexts to mean unclear or indistinct.
その説明は不明瞭だった。
The explanation was ambiguous.
Colloquial and slightly softer than 曖昧. Often implies uncertainty or unreliability. Used with な.
彼の言い方はあやふやだ。
His way of speaking is ambiguous.
Literally "neither one nor the other." Used for situations or answers that are indecisive or ambiguous between two options.
彼の態度はどっちつかずだ。
His attitude is ambiguous.
When someone intentionally avoids being clear, often to mislead or avoid commitment.
Also works for intentional vagueness. Context makes the intent clear.

English speakers often overuse 曖昧. In Japanese, 曖昧 is natural for vague statements or unclear boundaries, but for ambiguous facial expressions or grammatical ambiguity, other expressions are more precise.
Literally "to muddy one's words." Means to be evasive or not give a straight answer.
彼は言葉を濁して、はっきり言わなかった。
He was ambiguous and didn't say it clearly.
婉曲な表現で断った。
He declined using an ambiguous expression.
