Translation guide
The English word "ancestor" refers to a person from whom one is descended, typically more remote than a grandparent. In Japanese, the most common and direct equivalent is 先祖 (senzo), but other words and expressions are used depending on context, such as formality, whether referring to a specific individual or ancestors collectively, or in metaphorical uses.

先祖 (senzo) is the everyday word for ancestors, often with a familial or cultural connotation. 祖先 (sosen) is more formal and academic, used in history, biology, and formal writing. When in doubt, 先祖 is safer for personal ancestors, while 祖先 is better for scientific contexts.
