The English word 'apostle' primarily refers to the early Christian leaders sent by Jesus, but can also mean a pioneering advocate of a cause. In Japanese, the most common equivalent is 使徒 (shito) for the biblical sense, while 伝道者 (dendōsha) or 唱道者 (shōdōsha) can be used for a passionate advocate.
