Attach to a number to indicate the batting order position. For example, 1番 (ichiban) is leadoff, 4番 (yonban) is cleanup.

The leadoff batter got on base.
To say 'batting Xth', use the number + 番 (ban). For example, 1番 (ichiban) means 'batting first' or 'leadoff'. You can also say 1番バッター (ichiban battā) for 'leadoff batter'.
