To ask a question in a soft, polite, or hesitant way, often when you are not sure if the answer is yes or if the question is appropriate.

An adverb meaning 'by any chance' or 'perhaps'. Used at the beginning of a sentence to introduce a guess or a tentative question. Common in casual and neutral speech.
Similar to もしかして, meaning 'by any chance' or 'could it be that...'. Slightly more casual and often used when the speaker has a sudden suspicion or idea.
Casual sentence-ending particles that express wondering or asking oneself. かな is gender-neutral but slightly masculine; かしら is feminine. They can soften a question when thinking aloud.

この電車は東京に行くかしら。
Does this train go to Tokyo, by any chance?

もしよろしければ、手伝っていただけませんか。
If you don't mind, could you help me, by any chance?
Both mean 'by any chance', but もしかして is more common and neutral. ひょっとして often implies a sudden realization or a wild guess, and is slightly more casual.

ひょっとして、財布を落とした?
