Translation guide
The English word 'candid' has two main uses: describing honest, direct speech (often about difficult topics) and describing unposed, natural photographs. Japanese uses different words for each meaning.
Expressing honest thoughts openly, even if uncomfortable
a candid opinion · to be candid with you · a candid discussion
The most common and natural way to say 'candid' when referring to honest, straightforward speech or opinions. Often used as a na-adjective.
Describing a photo taken without the subject posing, capturing a natural moment
a candid photo · candid shots · candid wedding photography
The most straightforward way to say 'candid photo.' 自然な means 'natural' and is widely understood.
彼は自然な写真を撮るのが上手だ。
He's good at taking candid photos.
率直 (sotchoku) emphasizes directness and frankness, often about opinions. 正直 (shōjiki) emphasizes honesty and truthfulness, often about facts or feelings. For 'candid opinion,' 率直 is more precise. For 'to be honest,' 正直 is more common.

正直、驚きました。
