Translation guide
A phrase used when a thought suddenly occurs to you, often introducing a new idea or recalling something. In Japanese, it is expressed with various adverbial phrases that signal a shift in thinking.
To introduce a thought that just occurred to you, often mid-conversation, similar to 'now that I think about it' or 'actually'.
The most common and natural way to say 'come to think of it' when you suddenly remember or realize something related to the current topic. Used in casual and polite speech.
To smoothly bring up a new subject that just crossed your mind, often in casual conversation.
そういえば is for spontaneous recollections, while 考えてみれば implies a more conscious reflection. Use そういえば in everyday chat; 考えてみれば when you're analyzing a situation.
そういえば、財布を忘れた。
Come to think of it, I forgot my wallet. (sudden realization)
考えてみれば、彼の言う通りだ。
Come to think of it, he's right. (after reflection)
Avoid literal translations like 「それについて考えるようになる」. They sound unnatural and are not used as conversational fillers.
そういえば、明日は休みだ。
Come to think of it, tomorrow is a holiday.
そういえば、彼にまだ返事してなかった。
Come to think of it, I haven't replied to him yet.
Literally 'if I try thinking about it', used when you reflect on something and realize a new perspective. Slightly more deliberate than そういえば.
考えてみれば、それは当然のことだ。
Come to think of it, that's only natural.
Used when someone's remark makes you realize something. 'Now that you mention it' or 'come to think of it' in response to another person.
言われてみれば、そうかもしれない。
Come to think of it, you might be right.
Literally 'if I think carefully', used when you reconsider something and change your mind or realize a mistake. More introspective.
よく考えたら、その計画は無理だ。
Come to think of it, that plan is impossible.
Also works perfectly for this use. It's the go-to phrase for 'by the way, I just thought of something'.
そういえば、来週のパーティーに行く?
Come to think of it, are you going to the party next week?
A very casual interjection meaning 'Oh, that's right' or 'Oh, I just remembered'. Often used when a thought suddenly pops up.
あ、そうだ。牛乳買わなきゃ。
Oh, come to think of it, I need to buy milk.
