Translation guide
In Japanese, the decimal point is a dot (.) in horizontal writing and a middle dot (・) in vertical writing. The word for the symbol itself is 小数点, and when reading numbers aloud, てん is used.
Referring to the written or printed dot that separates the integer part from the fractional part of a number.
The standard term for the decimal point symbol. Used in mathematical and everyday contexts.
小数点以下を四捨五入してください。
Please round off the numbers after the decimal point.
Sometimes used to refer to the dot symbol itself, especially in computing or when describing the key on a keyboard.
数字の間にピリオドを入れてください。
Please put a period between the numbers.
Loanword from English 'dot'. Used in technical contexts like IP addresses or version numbers, but not standard for decimal points in mathematics.
IPアドレスはドットで区切られています。
IP addresses are separated by dots.
Saying a number with a decimal point, such as 3.14.
When reading a decimal number, say the integer part, then てん, then each digit of the fractional part individually. For example, 3.14 is さんてんいちよん.
円周率は3.14です。
Pi is 3.14.
0.5は「れいてんご」と読みます。
0.5 is read as 'rei ten go'.
After てん, each digit is read individually. For example, 0.25 is れいてんにご, not れいてんにじゅうご. This is similar to English.
0.25
zero point two five
In vertical Japanese text, the decimal point is often written as a middle dot (・) instead of a period (.). However, the reading remains the same.
