Translation guide
Expressing a conditional desire or request politely in Japanese. The most natural translations depend on whether you are making a request, stating a personal wish, or setting a condition.
Asking someone to do something if it is possible for them, often in service or formal situations.
Literally 'if (you) can', used before a request to soften it. Very common and polite.
できれば、明日までに返事をください。
If possible, please reply by tomorrow.
More formal than できれば, often used in written or business contexts.
可能であれば、会議の日程を変更していただけませんか。
If possible, could you change the meeting schedule?
Literally 'if it's good/all right', used to politely offer an alternative or make a suggestion. Implies 'if it's convenient for you'.
よろしければ、こちらにおかけください。
If you'd like, please have a seat here.
Stating that you want to do something if circumstances allow.
Conditional form of できる (can) + 〜たい (want to). Used for personal desires.
できたら、来年日本に行きたいです。
If possible, I want to go to Japan next year.
More formal/literary version using 可能 (possible).
可能なら、もう少し早く帰りたい。
If possible, I want to go home a little earlier.
Describing that something will happen or should be done only if it is possible.
Means 'as much as possible' or 'to the extent possible'. Used before verbs.
可能な限り早く対応します。
I will respond as soon as possible.
Very common phrase meaning 'as much as one can'. Slightly less formal than 可能な限り.
できるだけ静かにしてください。
Please be as quiet as possible.
Directly translating 'if possible' as 「もし可能なら」 is grammatically correct but can sound stiff or overly literal in casual conversation. Use できれば or できたら for natural speech.
