Translation guide
How to express doing something based on instinct, without conscious thought, in Japanese.
To describe an action done automatically, based on gut feeling or innate response, not rational thought.
The most direct and common translation. Used for actions driven by instinct, like a reflex or innate behavior.
彼は本能的に危険を察知した。
He instinctively sensed danger.
猫は本能的に高いところに登る。
Cats instinctively climb to high places.
To express an innate understanding or feeling without logical reasoning.
Common pattern for 'to know instinctively'. The verb わかる (to understand) pairs naturally with 本能的に.
彼が嘘をついていることは本能的にわかった。
I instinctively knew he was lying.
本能的に is for innate, biological instincts (e.g., survival, animal behavior). 直感的に is for intuition or gut feelings in decision-making. 反射的に is for physical reflexes (like flinching). Choose based on the nuance you want.
In English, 'instinctively' can be used lightly (e.g., 'I instinctively reached for my phone'). In Japanese, 本能的に sounds strong and biological. For habitual or unconscious actions, 無意識に or つい (unintentionally) may be better.
Emphasizes intuition or a gut feeling rather than pure biological instinct. Often used for decisions or judgments.
直感的にこのボタンを押した。
I instinctively pressed this button.
Means 'reflexively', for immediate physical reactions without thought. Closer to 'automatically' in a physical sense.
熱い鍋に触れて、反射的に手を引っ込めた。
I touched the hot pot and instinctively pulled my hand back.
Literally 'unconsciously'. Used when you do something without being aware of it, often out of habit or deeply ingrained behavior.
彼は無意識に髪を触る癖がある。
He has a habit of instinctively touching his hair.
Means 'naturally' or 'spontaneously'. Can imply an instinctive action that feels effortless or unforced, but less precise than 本能的に.
彼女は自然に笑顔になった。
She instinctively smiled.
Using 直感 (intuition) as a noun. Emphasizes a gut feeling rather than biological instinct.
直感でそれが正しいとわかった。
I instinctively knew it was right.
Idiomatic: 'to feel with one's skin'. Means to sense something intuitively or instinctively, often through experience or atmosphere.
危険を肌で感じて逃げた。
I instinctively felt the danger and ran away.
