A formal Japanese-style room with tatami, used for receiving guests. Not exactly a 'living room' in the Western sense, but sometimes translated as such in traditional contexts.
In modern apartments, リビング is the default. 居間 is more traditional and may sound old-fashioned to younger people, but it's still understood. If you're unsure, リビング is safer.
