How to express the idea of overlooking something in Japanese, including physical views, failing to notice, and deliberately ignoring.
Describing a place that looks out over a scene from a higher position.
Accidentally not seeing or noticing something, often a detail or mistake.
Choosing to ignore a fault, mistake, or bad behavior, often out of generosity.
見落とす is almost always accidental (missing a detail). 見過ごす can be accidental or deliberate (letting something pass). 見逃す can mean missing a chance to see something (like a movie) or deliberately overlooking a fault. For deliberate overlooking out of kindness, 大目に見る is the most natural choice.
映画を見逃した。
I missed the movie (failed to see it).
見下ろす only means physically looking down from a height. Using it for 'overlooking a mistake' would be completely wrong. Use 見落とす or 大目に見る instead.
The most common verb for a place or person looking down on a scene from above. Often used for scenic views.
このホテルの部屋は海を見下ろしている。
This hotel room overlooks the ocean.
山の上から町を見下ろした。

Describes a place with a good, open view. Not a direct translation of 'overlook' but often used in similar contexts.
