Expressing that someone takes part in an event, meeting, class, competition, etc.
The most common and general word for participation. Used for events, meetings, classes, competitions, etc. Can be used as a noun or with する to form a verb.
会議に参加します。
I will participate in the meeting.
参加者は100人以上でした。
There were over 100 participants.
Specifically for participating in a competition, tournament, or race. Implies entering as a contestant.
彼はオリンピックに出場した。
He participated in the Olympics.
Literally 'joining a battle'. Used for entering a competition, especially in gaming, sports, or business contexts. Can sound aggressive or enthusiastic.
次の大会に参戦するつもりだ。
I plan to participate in the next tournament.
Expressing involvement in a project, organization, or collaborative effort.
Also used for involvement in projects, volunteer activities, or groups.
ボランティア活動に参加しています。
I am participating in volunteer activities.
Implies active involvement in planning or decision-making, not just attendance. Often used in business or policy contexts.
Involvement, often with a nuance of being concerned or having a hand in something. Can be neutral or negative (e.g., involvement in a scandal).
Simply being present at an event without necessarily active involvement.
Used for attendance at meetings, classes, ceremonies. Focuses on being present rather than active participation.
明日の会議に出席しますか?
Will you attend tomorrow's meeting?
Can also imply attendance, but often suggests more active involvement than 出席.

Referring to the level or count of participation.
Participation rate.
参加率が低い。
The participation rate is low.
Number of participants.

参加 (sanka) is general participation. 出席 (shusseki) is attendance, often for formal gatherings like meetings or classes. 出場 (shutsujō) is for competitions. Use 参加 when you actively take part; 出席 when your presence is the main point.

English often uses 'participation' in contexts where Japanese prefers a more specific verb. For example, 'join a club' is 部活に入る, not 部活に参加する. 'Take part in a conversation' is 会話に加わる. Consider the natural collocation.
