Translation guide
In Japanese, the term for 'party leader' depends on the type of party and context. For political parties, 党首 (toushu) is the general term, while 総裁 (sousai) is used for the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party. For social gatherings, 幹事 (kanji) refers to the organizer or person in charge.
The head or chief of a political party.
The person who plans and manages a party or gathering.
The organizer or person in charge of a social event like a drinking party or class reunion. Not a political leader.
党首 is the safest general term for a political party leader. 総裁 is specific to the LDP. 代表 is used by some parties but can be ambiguous. When in doubt, use 党首.
各党の党首が集まった。
The leaders of each party gathered.
Do not translate 'party leader' as パーティーリーダー, which sounds like a dance party instructor or game role. Use the appropriate term based on context.
A party leader debate was held.
Specifically used for the president of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Not a general term.
自民党の総裁が首相に選ばれた。

Used for the leader of some parties, like the Constitutional Democratic Party. Can also mean 'representative' in other contexts.
