Translation guide
The English word "pole" covers several distinct concepts: a long slender object, a geographical extreme, a magnetic terminal, and an opinion extreme. Japanese uses different words for each, and direct translation is often unnatural.

English 'pole' is often translated as 棒, but in many specific contexts Japanese uses a more precise word. For example, a 'fishing pole' is 釣り竿, not 釣り棒. A 'ski pole' is スキーのストック or ポール, not スキーの棒. Always check the natural collocation.
棒 is a generic stick/rod. 竿 is a long slender pole, often bamboo, used for hanging or fishing. 柱 is a structural pillar or post. Use 電柱 for utility pole, 物干し竿 for laundry pole, and 棒 for a simple stick.
