In Japanese, 'private university' is most commonly expressed as 私立大学 (shiritsu daigaku). There is also a less common term 私学 (shigaku), which can refer to private schools in general or private universities specifically.

A somewhat formal or abbreviated term that can mean 'private school' or 'private university' depending on context. Often used in contrast to 公立 (public) or 国立 (national).
Both 私立 (しりつ) and 市立 (しりつ) are pronounced 'shiritsu' but have different meanings. 私立 means 'private', while 市立 means 'municipal' (city-run). In writing, the kanji make the distinction clear, but in speech, context is needed. To avoid confusion, 私立 is sometimes pronounced わたくしりつ (watakushiritsu) and 市立 as いちりつ (ichiritsu).
