校正 (kōsei) focuses on typographical errors, formatting, and consistency with the original manuscript. 校閲 (kōetsu) goes further to check factual accuracy, logic, and content. In many workplaces, these roles overlap, but 校正者 is the safer default for 'proofreader'.

The direct loanword プルーフリーダー (purūfurīdā) is rarely used and may not be understood. Stick with 校正者 or 校閲者.
