Translation guide
The English word "quarry" has two main meanings: a place where stone is extracted, and an animal being hunted. These meanings are expressed with different Japanese words.
A place where stone, sand, or minerals are dug out of the ground.
The most common and direct translation for a stone quarry.
あの山の向こうに大きな採石場があります。
There is a large quarry beyond that mountain.
Literally 'stone-cutting place', often used for traditional stone quarries.
この石切り場は江戸時代から使われています。
This quarry has been used since the Edo period.
A more general term for a mining site, not limited to stone.
その会社は複数の採掘場を運営している。
The company operates several quarries.
An animal that is being hunted or pursued.
General term for game or prey in hunting.
猟師は獲物を追いかけた。
The hunter chased his quarry.
Means 'target', can be used metaphorically for a person or animal being pursued.
Literally 'object of hunting', a more descriptive phrase.
この地域では鹿が主な狩りの対象だ。
In this area, deer are the main quarry.
The Japanese words for 'quarry' are completely different depending on whether you mean a mine or prey. Using 採石場 for a hunted animal would be nonsense.
警察は犯人を標的として追跡した。
The police tracked the suspect as their quarry.
