The act of proving a statement, argument, or belief to be wrong. In Japanese, expressing refutation depends heavily on context, politeness, and whether you are directly countering someone's claim or simply presenting a counterargument.
To state that someone's argument or statement is wrong, often in a debate, discussion, or formal setting.
The most direct and common noun for 'refutation' or 'counterargument'. Used in both formal and informal contexts.
I refute his opinion.
There is room for refutation of that claim.
A more formal or literary term for refutation, often used in academic or written contexts.
He refuted the theory.
To completely defeat someone in an argument; to refute so thoroughly that the opponent cannot respond. Often used in competitive debate contexts.
He refuted his opponent completely.
To talk someone down; to refute by out-talking. Implies a more aggressive or dominating style of argument.
He refuted his opponent in the debate by out-talking them.
To refute by presenting facts, data, or logical reasoning that shows something is false.
Literally 'to prove the error'. A clear and straightforward way to express refutation through evidence.

To disprove or refute with counterevidence. Common in legal, scientific, and logical contexts.

To deny or negate. While broader than 'refute', it is often used when rejecting a claim outright.
Can simply mean 'deny' without providing evidence. Use 反証する or 誤りを証明する when emphasizing proof.
He strongly refuted the suspicion.
To refer to the act of refuting in scholarly articles, essays, or formal reports.
Also used in academic contexts as a section heading or to describe counterarguments.
This paper develops a refutation of previous research.
A formal term for a refutation essay or argument. Rarely used outside academic or literary contexts.
反論 is the general term for counterargument or refutation, suitable for most situations. 反駁 is more formal and often used in writing or serious debate. 論破 implies completely defeating the opponent in argument, often with a nuance of overwhelming them.
While 反論 is the closest equivalent, directly translating 'refutation' as 反論 in every context can sound unnatural. Consider the specific action: proving wrong (誤りを証明する), disproving with evidence (反証する), or denying (否定する).
He published a refutation of that theory.
