ショール is a general shawl, often square or triangular, worn over shoulders. ストール (stole) is usually longer and narrower, often made of lighter material, and can be draped around the neck or shoulders. マフラー (muffler) is a winter scarf, typically knitted and wrapped around the neck for warmth.

While ショール is the most common equivalent, it may not fit all situations. For example, a prayer shawl is usually タッリート (tallit) or 祈祷用ショール, not just ショール. A pashmina shawl might be called パシュミナ or パシュミナストール. Always consider the specific type and cultural context.
