小競り合い (kozeriai) is a small-scale, brief clash, while 戦闘 (sentō) refers to combat or battle in general, which can be larger and more prolonged. Use 小競り合い for skirmishes, not full battles.
The English word 'skirmish' is often used metaphorically for minor disputes. In Japanese, 小競り合い can be used similarly, but for purely verbal arguments, 口論 (kōron) or 言い争い (iiarasoi) are more natural.
