Expresses 'up to this point' in time, distance, or degree. Japanese uses different expressions depending on whether the focus is on a continuing state, a completed action, or a limit.

So far I haven't seen it.
To say that something has been the case from the past up to the present moment, and may continue.
The most common and neutral way to say 'so far' when describing a state or situation that has continued until now. Often used with 〜ている or 〜たことがない.
今まで順調です。
So far, so good.
今まで一度も海外に行ったことがありません。
I've never been abroad so far.
Similar to 今まで, but slightly more formal or emphatic. Often used in speeches or writing.
これまで大きな問題はありませんでした。
So far there have been no major problems.
To talk about what has been done or experienced up to the present, often with a nuance of 'so far' in a sequence.
Literally 'up to here', used for progress in a task or narrative. Implies a point reached in a process.
ここまで何か質問はありますか？
So far, do you have any questions?
ここまでは順調に進んでいます。
So far, things are going smoothly.
Emphasizes 'as of now' with an implication that the situation might change. Often used with negative or tentative statements.
To indicate that something is true only up to a point, or that you can only go so far.
Means 'to a certain extent' or 'up to a point'. Used when acknowledging a limit.
ある程度までは彼の意見に賛成です。
I agree with him so far (up to a point).
Can also mean 'this far' in a physical or metaphorical sense of limit.
ここまで来たら、もう引き返せない。
Having come so far, we can't turn back now.
To say that something hasn't happened up to now, but might later.
The standard way to say 'not yet' or 'still not'. Often corresponds to 'so far' in negative contexts.
彼はまだ来ていません。
He hasn't arrived so far.
今まで is the most common for 'up to now' in daily conversation. これまで is slightly more formal and often used in writing or speeches. ここまで literally means 'up to here' and is used for progress in a task or physical distance.
Do not translate 'so far' word-for-word as そう遠く (that would mean 'so distant'). Use the time expressions above.
