Expresses participation or involvement in an activity, event, or group. Japanese uses different verbs depending on whether you join as a member, participate in an event, or take part in a discussion.
To take part in an organized event, meeting, competition, class, etc.
The most general and common way to say 'take part in' or 'participate in'. Used for events, meetings, classes, competitions, etc.

Many countries took part in the Olympics.
Literally 'to go out', but commonly used for participating in events, especially performances, competitions, or appearing on TV/radio. More casual than 参加する.

I'm taking part in the upcoming concert.
彼はテレビ番組に出た。
He appeared on a TV show.
Literally 'to go to war', but used figuratively for joining a competition, contest, or battle (e.g., gaming, sports). Slangy/enthusiastic tone.
次の大会に参戦するぞ!
I'm gonna take part in the next tournament!
To become a member of a club, team, company, etc.
The standard verb for joining a group, club, or organization. Focuses on becoming a member.

彼は新しい会社に入った。
He joined a new company.
More formal than 入る, often used for joining insurance, membership programs, or formal organizations.

To participate verbally, contribute to a discussion.
Literally 'to join a conversation'. Natural for joining an ongoing discussion.

参加する is the safest, most neutral word for 'participate'. 出る is more casual and often implies appearing on stage or in a competition. Use 参加する for meetings, classes, and formal events; use 出る for performances, contests, or TV appearances.
会議に参加する (○) / 会議に出る (△: possible but less formal)
participate in a meeting
参加する is for events/activities, not for becoming a member. To join a club or company, use 入る (はいる). Saying サッカー部に参加する sounds unnatural; say サッカー部に入る.
