Translation guide
English 'the' has no direct equivalent in Japanese. Japanese does not use articles. Instead, context, word order, and particles like は (topic) and が (subject) signal definiteness. Learners must shift from translating 'the' to understanding how Japanese marks what is known or specific.
猫を見ました。その猫は黒かったです。
I saw a cat. The cat was black.
その (that) can explicitly mark a previously mentioned item.
The speaker assumes the listener knows which specific thing is being referred to.
Use the topic particle は after a noun to mark it as the known topic of the sentence. This often corresponds to 'the' in English.
空は青い。
The sky is blue.
先生は教室にいます。
The teacher is in the classroom.
その means 'that' and can be used like 'the' to refer to something previously mentioned or known from context.
その本をください。
Please give me the book.
In many cases, especially in casual speech, no particle or word is needed; the definiteness is understood from context.
水、冷たいね。
The water is cold, isn't it?
The speaker refers back to an entity already introduced in the conversation.
その explicitly points back to a previously mentioned noun, similar to 'the' in English.
犬がいる。その犬は大きい。
There is a dog. The dog is big.
Once a topic is established, は can continue to refer to it as 'the'.
昨日、猫を見た。猫は白かった。
Yesterday I saw a cat. The cat was white.
Referring to something that is one of a kind or a general class.
Using 'the' with superlatives (the best) or ordinals (the first).
There is no word for 'the' in Japanese. Adding unnecessary words will make your Japanese unnatural. Instead, rely on context and particles.
本を読んだ。本は面白かった。
I read a book. The book was interesting.
は often marks a topic that is already known (like 'the'), while が often introduces new information (like 'a'). However, this is not a strict rule; context matters more.
When you need to clearly refer back to something just mentioned, その (that) works like 'the' in English.
昨日映画を見た。その映画はとても長かった。
I saw a movie yesterday. The movie was very long.
テーブルの上の本は私のです。
The book on the table is mine.
青いのが好きです。
I like the blue one.
