Translation guide
Used for emphasis in negative statements, meaning 'not at all' or 'none at all'. In Japanese, this is expressed through negative polarity items, emphatic negative constructions, or adverbs that strengthen negation.
Strengthen a negative statement to mean 'absolutely no/not any'.
The adverb 全く (mattaku) means 'completely' or 'at all', and when paired with a negative verb/adjective, it creates a strong 'not at all' meaning. This is the most direct and common equivalent.
彼は全く興味がない。
He has no interest whatsoever.
その話は全く信じられない。
I can't believe that story whatsoever.
Emphasize that there is absolutely no instance of the noun.
This pattern uses 何の (nan no) meaning 'what kind of' plus the noun and も (mo) with a negative verb to mean 'no X whatsoever'.
彼には何の才能もない。
He has no talent whatsoever.
その計画には何の意味もない。
There is no meaning whatsoever to that plan.
There is no single Japanese word that corresponds to 'whatsoever'. It is always expressed through negative constructions with adverbs or particles. Attempting a direct translation will result in unnatural Japanese.
The particle も (mo) is often used with question words (何, 誰, etc.) in negative sentences to mean 'no X whatsoever'. For example, 誰もいない (dare mo inai) means 'there is no one whatsoever'.
Literally 'not even a little', this phrase emphasizes a complete lack. It is slightly more colloquial than 全く.
彼女は少しも疲れていない。
She isn't tired whatsoever.
Means 'not a single thing'. Used with nouns to emphasize that there is absolutely nothing of that category.
冷蔵庫には何一つ食べ物がない。
There is no food whatsoever in the fridge.
A formal/written expression meaning 'not at all' or 'none whatsoever'. Often used in official statements or rules.
この件について一切の責任を負いません。
We accept no responsibility whatsoever regarding this matter.
Means 'not at all' in the sense of 'completely not'. Often used with adjectives or verbs to express a total lack of a quality.
彼の説明はまるでわからなかった。
I didn't understand his explanation whatsoever.
Formal equivalent of 何の〜もない, using 一切 (issai) for 'any whatsoever'.
彼は一切の財産も持っていない。
He has no property whatsoever.
