beg, invite, ask
乞 centers on requesting something from another: begging for help, inviting someone to act, or asking for a favor.
乞 is thought to be a simplified variant of 气, originally depicting vapor or breath, later borrowed for begging or asking. The exact historical development is uncertain.
The top stroke looks like a hand reaching out, and the lower curved stroke is a person bowing: someone begging or asking for something.
For コツ, imagine begging for a coat on a cold day: coat -> コツ, and the person is asking for warmth.
