but; however; yet

A common conjunction used to introduce a contrasting or unexpected statement. Often used at the beginning of a sentence or clause. Slightly more formal than でも, but still widely used in both spoken and written Japanese.

• 彼かれは若わかい。だが、とてもしっかりしている。

  He is young. But he is very reliable.

• 努ど力りょくした。だが、結けっ果かは出でなかった。

  I made an effort. However, I didn't get results.
