noun
last place; bottom of the list; tailender
Colloquial noun for being in last position in a ranking, race, or exam results. Often used with になる or だ.
彼はクラスでビリだった。
He was last in the class.
マラソンでビリになるのは嫌だ。
I hate coming in last in a marathon.
Probably from the English word 'bill' or a truncation of 'billiards', but the exact derivation is uncertain. Used in Japanese since at least the early 20th century to mean 'last place'.
