Expresses that there is no alternative; the situation forces one to do something. Often follows a verb in dictionary form or ～するよりほかない.

• こうなったら、最さい後ごまでやるほかない。

  Now that it's come to this, I have no choice but to see it through.

• バスがないので、歩あるいて帰かえるほかなかった。

  There was no bus, so I had no choice but to walk home.
