A person who habitually sees the worst aspect of things or believes that the worst will happen. Often contrasted with 楽観主義者 (optimist).

Compound of 悲観 (pessimism) + 主義 (doctrine, -ism) + 者 (person). The term 悲観主義 is a Meiji-era calque of Western 'pessimism'.
