pronoun
Archaic second-person pronoun used to address someone of equal or lower status. Found in classical literature, poetry, and religious texts. Not used in modern conversation.
汝の名は何と申す。
What is thy name?
聖書には「汝、殺すなかれ」とある。
The Bible says, 'Thou shalt not kill.'
The historical derivation is uncertain; the kanji 汝 and 爾 are conventional spellings for the archaic pronoun なんじ.
