Used when someone is being flattered or coaxed into doing something, often with a slightly manipulative or playful tone. Can also mean to instigate or stir up.
彼は上司におだてられて、つい残業を引き受けてしまった。
He was flattered by his boss and ended up accepting overtime work.
おだてて子供に片付けをさせる。
I butter up the child to get them to tidy up.
