Archaic intransitive verb referring to ritual purification, especially in Shinto or classical contexts. Modern Japanese uses 禊をする or 身を清める instead.
古事記には、伊邪那岐命が筑紫の日向の橘の小門の阿波岐原で禊ぎたまひきとある。
In the Kojiki, it is written that Izanagi-no-Mikoto purified himself at Awagihara by the river-mouth of Tachibana in Himuka of Tsukushi.
