Describes pivoting on the spot and going back the way one came, often abruptly or with finality. Both きびす and くびす readings are used; きびす is more common in modern Japanese.

• 彼かれは踵きびすを返かえして駅えきへ戻もどった。

  He turned on his heel and went back to the station.

• 一ひと言ことも言いわずにきびすを返かえした。

  Without a word, she turned on her heel and left.
