Expresses a location or approximate amount near a reference point. In Japanese, the phrasing depends on whether you mean a physical place, a point in time, or an approximate quantity.
Referring to a location that is near or in the vicinity of a known place.
A common, natural way to say 'around there' when pointing to or referring to a general area. Often used with に or で.
Expressing 'around that amount' or 'around that time'.
Used for approximate quantities, degrees, or extents. Can also be それくらい.
そのくらいの大きさの箱が必要です。
I need a box around that size.
そのくらいで十分です。
Around that much is enough.
Do not directly translate 'around there' as まわりそこ or similar. Use the natural phrases above depending on context.
その辺 (そのへん) is more common in casual speech. その辺り (そのあたり) is slightly more formal and often used in writing or polite conversation. Both are interchangeable in many situations.
The station is around there.
その辺で会いましょう。
Let's meet around there.
Used when the location is farther from both speaker and listener, or when referring to a place known to both.
あの辺にコンビニがありますか？
Is there a convenience store around there?
Slightly more formal or written than その辺. 辺り can be used with other demonstratives like この辺り, あの辺り.
その辺りは静かですね。
It's quiet around there, isn't it?
Literally 'near that (place)'. Used when the reference point is clear.
その近くに駐車場はありますか？
Is there a parking lot around there?
Refers to 'around that time' in the past or future. その時 (そのとき) is more specific.
その頃、私は学生でした。
Around that time, I was a student.
Can also be used figuratively for 'around that point' in a discussion or scale.
その辺でやめておきます。
I'll stop around there (at that point).
