The English word "confusion" covers several distinct situations: mental uncertainty, misunderstanding, disorder, and even a state of embarrassment. Japanese uses different words and phrases for each.

混乱 is general confusion (mental or situational chaos), while 混同 specifically means mixing up two things or mistaking one for another. Use 混同 when you confuse A with B.

In casual speech, English 'I'm confused' is often better expressed with わけがわからない or 頭がこんがらがる. Using 混乱 in everyday conversation can sound too formal or strong.
