Describes a state of mental confusion or disorientation when faced with an unexpected situation, unclear instructions, or something unfamiliar. Often used with する to mean 'to be bewildered' or 'to be at a loss'.

Archaic senses. Sense 2 refers to the confusion felt when waking up in the dark and not recognizing one's surroundings. Sense 3 refers to the momentary confusion of forgetting which house or room one intended to enter. These are not used in modern Japanese outside of historical or literary contexts.
