Refers to the future in a more abstract or long-term sense, like one's career or life plans. Not used for immediate future.
将来は医者になりたい。
I want to become a doctor in the future.
To express that something will happen eventually, but without specifying when.
Means 'someday' or 'one day'. Used for hopes, dreams, or vague future events.
いつか日本に行きたい。
I want to go to Japan someday.
いつかまた会いましょう。
Let's meet again someday.
Literally 'future', often used in a grand or sci-fi sense. Can sound dramatic in daily conversation.
To say that something will happen relatively soon, within a short time from now.
Means 'in the near future' or 'before long'. Common in both casual and polite speech.
近いうちにまた連絡します。
I'll contact you again in the near future.
Means 'sooner or later' or 'one of these days'. Implies no rush, but eventually.
そのうちわかるよ。
You'll understand in time.
To talk about a time far from now, often hypothetical or speculative.
Literally 'distant future'. Used for long-term forecasts or science fiction contexts.
遠い将来、人類は火星に住むかもしれない。
In the distant future, humans might live on Mars.
Similar to 遠い将来, but 未来 feels more abstract or poetic.
遠い未来のことは誰にもわからない。
No one knows about the distant future.
今後 (こんご) is for practical, near-term 'from now on'. 将来 (しょうらい) is for personal long-term future (career, life). 未来 (みらい) is for the abstract or distant future, often technological or philosophical.
English speakers often use 'in the future' for everyday plans, but 未来 can sound overly dramatic. Use 今後 or これから for normal situations.
