Translation guide
In Japanese, the concept of 'oneself' is rarely expressed with a single direct equivalent. Instead, it is conveyed through reflexive pronouns, context-dependent words for 'self', or by using the generic term for 'person'. The choice depends on whether you are referring to yourself, people in general, or someone else's self.
Expressing that the subject does something to or for themselves, or that the action reflects back on the subject.
The most common and versatile word for 'self'. It can mean 'myself', 'yourself', 'himself', etc., depending on context. Used reflexively or to emphasize 'one's own'.
自分を信じて。
Believe in yourself.
彼は自分の部屋を掃除した。
He cleaned his own room.
Emphasizes 'oneself' as opposed to others. Often used in compounds like 自分自身 (oneself). More emphatic than 自分 alone.
自分自身を守る。
Protect oneself.
彼自身がそう言った。
He himself said so.
Formal or technical term for 'self', used in compounds like 自己紹介 (self-introduction) or 自己中心的 (self-centered). Not used alone in casual speech.
自己紹介をお願いします。
Please introduce yourself.
Making a general statement about people, equivalent to 'one' or 'you' in English.
The generic word for 'person' or 'people'. Used to make general statements about what people do or should do.
人は自分を守るものだ。
One protects oneself.
人は誰でも間違える。
Everyone makes mistakes. (lit. People all make mistakes.)
Can also be used impersonally to mean 'oneself' in general statements, often paired with 人.
Japanese often avoids explicit 'oneself' by using passive or potential verbs to express general ability or necessity.
このドアは簡単に開けられる。
One can open this door easily. (lit. This door can be opened easily.)
Doing something without help or company.
Literally 'by one person', used for doing something alone or by oneself.
一人で映画を見に行った。

一人でできますか?
Can you do it by yourself?
Emphasizes doing something on one's own, without relying on others. Can overlap with 'by oneself' but focuses on personal agency.
自分で決めてください。
Please decide for yourself.
English 'oneself' often corresponds to no explicit word in Japanese. For example, 'to enjoy oneself' is simply 楽しむ (たのしむ), not 自分を楽しむ. Always check if a natural Japanese verb already incorporates the reflexive meaning.
自分 is the everyday word for 'self'. 自身 adds emphasis ('oneself' as opposed to others). 自己 is formal and used mainly in compounds. For most situations, 自分 is sufficient.
It's important to take care of oneself.
