Translation guide
The English word "region" can refer to a geographical area, an administrative division, a cultural zone, or a part of the body. Japanese uses different words depending on the context, and the most natural choice often depends on scale, formality, and whether the region is defined by political boundaries, cultural identity, or physical features.
どちらの地域のご出身ですか?
What region are you from?
Polite form. In casual speech, you might say どの辺? (どのへん?) but that is very informal.
関西地方
the Kansai region
Referring to a broad area defined by natural features, climate, or general location, not necessarily with strict borders.
The most common and versatile word for 'region' or 'area'. It can refer to any geographical area, from a neighborhood to a large zone. Neutral in tone and widely used in everyday conversation and writing.
この地域は冬に雪がたくさん降ります。
This region gets a lot of snow in winter.
山間地域では交通が不便です。
Transportation is inconvenient in mountainous regions.
Often used for larger, somewhat distinct regions within a country, like 'the Kansai region' or 'rural areas'. It can carry a nuance of being away from the capital or major cities.
彼は東北地方の出身です。
He is from the Tohoku region.
地方の経済を活性化する必要がある。
We need to revitalize the economies of rural regions.
Refers to a zone or belt, often used in compound terms like 'industrial region' (工業地帯) or 'coastal region' (沿岸地帯). More technical or specific than 地域.
その工場は工業地帯にあります。
The factory is in an industrial region.
Referring to an officially defined area for governance, such as a state, province, prefecture, or district.
Also used for administrative regions, especially when the boundaries are set by local government or for statistical purposes.
この地域は市の管轄です。
This region is under the jurisdiction of the city.
Specifically means 'administrative district' or 'ward'. Used for official divisions within a city or prefecture.
Refers to a district or zone, often used for smaller administrative units or designated areas within a city.
Referring to a region defined by shared culture, language, cuisine, or economic activity, rather than strict political borders.
Again, 地域 is the go-to word. It naturally covers cultural and economic regions when context makes it clear.
この地域の伝統料理はとてもユニークです。
The traditional cuisine of this region is very unique.
Means 'sphere' or 'zone' and is used as a suffix to indicate a cultural or economic area, like '首都圏' (metropolitan area) or '英語圏' (English-speaking region).
Referring to a specific area or part of the body, often in medical or anatomical contexts.
The standard term for 'region' or 'part' of the body. Used in medical, anatomical, and everyday contexts.
痛みがある部位を教えてください。
Please tell me the region where you feel pain.
More general word for 'part' or 'portion'. Can be used for body regions but is less specific than 部位.
Referring to a region in a more abstract sense, such as a region of space, a region in a diagram, or a metaphorical area.
Means 'territory', 'domain', or 'area'. Used for abstract, mathematical, or conceptual regions, as well as physical areas when emphasizing boundaries or scope.

グラフのこの領域に注目してください。

Means 'range' or 'scope'. Can be used when 'region' implies a bounded area within a larger whole, like a region of values or a region of interest.
地域 (ちいき) is the most general and can be used for almost any kind of region. 地方 (ちほう) often implies a larger, culturally distinct area or a rural area away from the capital. 地区 (ちく) is usually a smaller, often administrative district within a city. For example, 関東地方 (Kanto region) is a large area, while 渋谷地区 (Shibuya district) is a specific part of Tokyo.
Using 地方 for a small neighborhood or a specific part of a city sounds unnatural. Stick with 地域 or 地区 for smaller areas.
The suffix 圏 (けん) is very useful for talking about metropolitan regions (首都圏, しゅとけん) or cultural/linguistic spheres (英語圏, えいごけん). It cannot be used alone; it must attach to a noun.
