Translation guide
The English word "riding" covers several distinct actions: traveling on a vehicle or animal, floating on water or air, and a specific sexual position. This guide focuses on the most common meaning for learners: being on or in a moving vehicle or animal. Japanese uses different verbs depending on what you ride and how you ride it.
Expressing the action of being on a bicycle, horse, train, car, etc., as a passenger or rider.
The most general verb for riding or boarding any vehicle or animal. It covers getting on and being on. Use the particle に for the vehicle/animal.

In English, 'riding' can sometimes be used loosely for driving a car or motorcycle, but in Japanese, 乗る (のる) means being a passenger. If you are operating the vehicle, use 運転する (うんてんする) for cars or バイクに乗る for motorcycles (where 乗る is still used because you straddle it).
乗る (のる) focuses on the action of boarding or the general habit. 乗っている (のっている) focuses on the state of being on board. Use 乗っている when you want to say 'I am riding (right now)'.
