Translation guide
The English word "ticket" covers several distinct concepts in Japanese. The most common is a ticket for transportation or an event, but it can also refer to a fine, a certificate, or even a metaphorical "ticket" to something. This guide breaks down the main uses and their natural Japanese equivalents.
A physical or digital pass allowing entry to an event, transportation, or a venue.
I bought a ticket for the concert. · Do you have your train ticket? · I need to pick up my plane ticket.
The most general word for a ticket, especially for trains, buses, and some events. It implies a physical ticket or a voucher. Can be used for movie tickets, but チケット is more common for entertainment.

切符 (きっぷ) is the traditional Japanese word and is strongly associated with physical tickets for trains and buses. チケット is a loanword and feels more modern, often used for entertainment events, flights, and online bookings. In many situations they are interchangeable, but 切符 sounds slightly more formal or old-fashioned for movies/concerts, while チケット is rarely used for a traffic fine. For a train ticket, 切符 is the safest choice.
When talking about a parking or speeding ticket, do not use チケット. It will not be understood as a fine. Use 違反切符 or simply 切符 in context, or rephrase with 罰金 (fine).
Many specific tickets are formed by adding 券 to a noun: 入場券 (admission ticket), 乗車券 (boarding ticket), 観覧券 (viewing ticket), 食券 (meal ticket). This pattern is very productive and safe to use.
