Translation guide
The English verb 'sidestep' has two main uses: a physical movement to avoid something, and a metaphorical sense of avoiding a topic or problem. Japanese uses different expressions for each.
To avoid dealing with a question, issue, or responsibility, often in conversation or decision-making.
sidestep a question · sidestep the issue · sidestep responsibility
To step aside quickly to avoid a physical object, person, or attack.
sidestep a punch · sidestep a puddle · sidestep an oncoming person
Literally 'dodge one's body'. The most natural way to describe physically sidestepping something like a punch or an oncoming person.
彼はパンチを身をかわして避けた。
He sidestepped the punch.
かわす implies a quick, evasive movement, often used for attacks or questions. 避ける is a broader 'avoid' and can be used for people, topics, or physical objects. よける is specifically for physically dodging something in your path.
Do not translate 'sidestep' literally as 横歩きする or similar. The physical action is usually expressed with よける or かわす, and the metaphorical sense with かわす or 避ける.
He skillfully sidestepped the question.
General verb for 'avoid'. Used for topics, problems, or people. Slightly more direct than かわす.

To dodge a question or evade giving a clear answer, often by being vague or changing the subject. Implies a deliberate, sometimes sly, avoidance.

Literally 'to run away'. Used metaphorically for avoiding responsibilities or difficult situations. Can sound a bit negative or cowardly.
